HISTORY OF THE GERIATRIC ART SOCIETY (G.A.S.) In the fall of 1990, a friend and fine artist, Harold Phenix invited twelve painters to participate on a group painting trip. The painters were from various parts of Texas and all loved to paint in the media of watercolor. The painting location was to be in and around the Rockport, Texas area. Participants stayed at the Bay House Condominiums. From this first meeting of fellow painters a special kinship came about. It was then decided that a painting trip should come about twice a year, once in the fall of the year and once in the spring. As years passed this small group began to grow in numbers. Many fine painters and friends of members were welcomed to join the group. Over the years some members have had to discontinue due to health, move in location, or unfortunately passed away. The group has had a significant turn over throughout the years, thus only a couple of painters are still active that participated in the original painting trip. Decisions were made during the first trip to not have any formal rules or designated officers and one hesitates to even suggest a change in this policy. The group did not have an identification. After several suggestions were considered Harold Phenix, suggested the acronym G.A.S. to represent the group and the group would be referred to as the “Geriatric Art Society”. Today this small group of painters is very active, participating in two painting sessions each year. They paint together, critique the paintings, socialize, and are known to have a short social drink together in the evening of the day. |
